I know, I know..... Telling time isn't a common core standard for kindergarten! BUT when you think about it, looking at clocks IS another way to practice number recognition. We learned the words "analog" and "digital" and looked at big numbers and small numbers and noticed that one hand on the analog clock was big and the other hand was little. We matched number to number which was one-to-one correspondence. So we really did study numbers in this math center! :)
Here are a few pictures of what the kids did. One activity was making a ladybug clock (after reading Eric Carle's The Grouchy Ladybug, of course! The other was matching digital times on flowers with the analog hands on a flowerpot clock. Spring ideas, for sure, but doesn't wishful thinking make it happen??

Thank you Cindy! Out here in California, we are still supposed to be using our California standards, not the Common Core yet and learning to tell time to the hour IS a California math standard for kinder. So a BIG thank you!
ReplyDeleteCamille (who can hardly wait until her state really switches to the Common Core standards!!!!)
An Open Door
In Illinois, we haven't switched yet either; but it is knocking on our door and I am trying to keep up with the changes! I STILL think telling time should be a part of the core! There is so much math involved in it! Thanks for your comment!
ReplyDeleteThose are adorable! In my district, we're in the process of changing over to Common Core. I'm going to a workshop this week all about them. I understand, however, that California has added 15 standards. So it will be interesting to see what Common Core looks like here.

First Grade Found Me
Cindy, I made a short video about telling time for my son. Its a nice first lesson as it focuses on telling the hour. Its a 3d animated elephant that dances while going through the hours of day. I hope others enjoy it too. Its on YouTube as Telling Time with Clark The Elephant.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Matt
Telling time is an activity which is must for kids at early ages because its the time when they starts learning the things and your blog is very helpful in that and there are many Telling Time Worksheets available on Internet for practice.
