Hi y'all! It's Leslie Ann from Life in First Grade and Life in Fifth Grade. Summer is coming to an end and it's back to school time for lots of you, myself included! Last year was my first year to teach 5th grade reading and I wanted to share something with y'all that helped me get to know my kids as readers.
Have y'all read The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller? I read it last summer and learn quite a few tips and tricks from it! At the beginning of the year, I give my students a Student Interest Survey. I cannot tell you how many times I referred back to this throughout the year. When I was having trouble with certain students not reaching an AR goal or having trouble finding books at the library, I'd pull out this survey and see if I could steer them in the right direction based on their interests and tastes in reading.

Throughout the year, I try and find books that I think the certain kids would enjoy and recommend them based on this survey. When I find a book, I write a quick little note and place it and the book on the student's desk. My kids LOVED this and always wanted me to find books for them so they could receive a special note :) I love doing something so simple that make a big impact on a kid and makes them feel special.
While I did this with 5th graders, you can definitely adapt it for lower grades! Be sure and download your free Student Interest Survey here :)
Thank you for the survey! The Brian books are great for reluctant boy readers, my son didn't like to read so much but he ate these books up! If I taught older grades I would recommend often. Dirt Road Teacher
